Foundations
Concrete foundations are the base upon which a structure or building stands. They provide stability and support and distribute the building's weight evenly to the ground. Typically made of reinforced concrete, these foundations are crucial for maintaining structural integrity and preventing settling or movement. Concrete foundations come in diverse forms tailored to specific construction needs.
Step one to any project is site preparation. This includes clearing the construction site of any debris, vegetation, or obstacles using land clearing construction equipment. Excavate the area to the required depth and dimensions as per the foundation design and compact the soil to create a stable base. Step two is setting the foundation. Using surveying tools to mark the layout of the foundation accurately, following the building plans. Then, we set stakes and string lines to outline the foundations perimeter and corners. Step three takes us to building formwork. Formwork is constructed using wood or steel to contain the concrete while it sets. Before we move on, we must ensure the formwork is properly aligned, leveled and secured. You might think this is it, time for concrete! However, we still have step four, which is; installing reinforcement. If required, place steel reinforcement within the formwork to add strength and prevent cracking. The material used for this is almost always rebar. Once this step is complete, it’s time to pour concrete! We won’t get into too many details on the process of pouring concrete, hopefully, you’ll get to see the process yourself! The remaining steps are as followed: Pouring the concrete, Leveling and consolidating, Finishing the surface, curing and protection and lastly, Removing formwork and site clean up. These steps provide a general overview, but the specific process may vary based on the type of foundation, site conditions, and engineering requirements. It's crucial to follow local building codes, adhere to proper construction practices, and consult professionals for guidance during each stage of laying concrete foundations.
SLABS
A concrete slab is a level concrete pour that maintains its thickness across the entire slab. Concrete slabs are common bases for recreational courts like basketball, tennis, and other sports settings. You may already have a concrete slab at home for your backyard patio or driveway, which are two more common applications for slabs.
Concrete slabs are extremely common and abundantly useful! Slabs have a similar building process to a foundation; they just require a little less. The steps to pouring a concrete slab begin the same as a foundation with site prep. Site prep includes marking dimensions with stakes and string lines, then digging out grass and topsoil. This stage is not as complex but still extremely important. Moving onto formwork; build a perimeter frame using wood boards like 2x4s secured with corner and center stakes to prevent bowing. Place wire mesh or rebar inside the form to provide structure and support. The rest of the process is up to us! From here, we will make sure your slab is level and following the correct slope.
